Brooks International Fellowship Programme

2026 – Gender and Queer Ecologies

Project type

Fellowship

Host institution

Delfina Foundation, in partnership with Tate (Tate Modern Curatorial Division), supported by the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation.  The programme brings international visual-arts practitioners to London for six-month research fellowships embedded in Tate and Delfina’s residency programme.

Overview

This fully funded fellowship invites an international practitioner to work with Tate Modern’s International Art and Conservation teams on the theme “Gender and Queer Ecologies.” The Fellow will reassess early modernist works (c.1860–1945) in Tate’s international collection, highlighting overlooked artworks and artists whose practices challenge gender hierarchies and explore bodies, sexuality and ecology. The fellowship combines curatorial research, archival and conservation work, and public-facing presentations, aiming to update collection interpretations through gender and queer theory, decolonial discourse and transnational perspectives.

Location

London, United Kingdom

Residency at Delfina Foundation; research placement at Tate Modern with visits to other Tate sites in the UK.

Duration and format

Six-month full-time fellowship: 22 June–6 December 2 026 (approximately 36 hours per week).

The Fellow divides time between Tate (around four days per week) and Delfina Foundation (around one day per week), with a busy schedule of research, internal meetings, seminars, professional-development activities and public events. This is a residential opportunity: the Fellow lives at Delfina Foundation with other residents for the entire period.

Eligibility

The fellowship is aimed at international practitioners based outside the UK who have established experience in visual arts or closely related fields and can demonstrate significant research or curatorial work relevant to gender and queer ecologies. Candidates should have:

  • Demonstrable expertise and ongoing research related to the theme “Gender and Queer Ecologies”

  • Experience with art-historical, curatorial, archival or provenance research

  • Interest in museum-based research and collection interpretation

  • Established professional practice (often mid-career), though formal postgraduate degrees are not required

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a large, multi-site museum and adapt to a busy institutional environment

  • Good working knowledge of English; reading ability in French, Italian or Spanish is desirable but not essential

  • Availability to live and work in London for the full fellowship period (22 June – 6 December 2026)

There is a second fellowship track (“Ecology of Migrating Identities”) under the same programme; candidates may apply to one or both, but can only hold one fellowship.

Benefits

Selected Fellows receive:

  • Six-month full-time research fellowship at Tate Modern Curatorial, with supported travel to Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives and other UK cultural institutions

  • Participation in Delfina Foundation’s residency programme, including guided visits, crits, portfolio reviews, and professional-development sessions

  • A single bedroom at Delfina Foundation’s communal residence in central London (shared kitchen, library, dining room and other facilities)

  • Return economy-class flight to London and airport transfers in the UK

  • Visa fee reimbursement and support with the visa process (if required)

  • Daily living allowance of £40 and a London local travel pass valid for Underground and buses

  • Access to Tate’s collections, archives, staff and networks

  • Opportunities to present research at Tate and Delfina events and to contribute to wider institutional activities and publications

Application materials

Applicants must complete the official Application Form and Diversity Monitoring Information Form available on Tate’s “Working at Tate” page for this opportunity. The open-call document specifies that:

  • Candidates should use the official Word application form (not PDF)

  • CVs or additional attachments are not accepted and will not be seen by the panel

  • Applicants must respond to specific questions about their experience, research interests and motivation in relation to the fellowship theme

  • Alternative formats (video or audio) are accepted for applicants who prefer not to submit written responses, provided they follow the same word-limit guidance

  • Completed applications must be submitted by email to [email protected]

Cost

The fellowship is fully funded. There is no programme fee. The fellowship provides travel, accommodation, visa reimbursement (if needed), daily living allowance and local transport in London. Fellows are expected to cover any personal additional expenses beyond what is outlined in the benefits.

Deadline

Application deadline: Thursday, 8 January 2026, 17:00 (5 p.m.) GMT.

Indicative timeline: shortlisted candidates are expected to be contacted by 21 January 2026; online interviews will take place between 28 January and 20 February 2026; successful candidates will be notified by 2 March 2026. Fellowship dates are 22 June – 6 December 2026.

Additional notes

  • The fellowship focuses on re-evaluating early modernist works (1860–1945) in Tate’s international collection, beginning from case studies such as the “Monsieur Vénus” display and expanding to other relevant works.

  • The open-call document emphasises that the fellowship is a professional-development opportunity rather than an internship, salaried job or general artist residency, and is designed as a mutual exchange between Tate staff and an international expert.

  • Tate explicitly asks that application responses be written personally by the candidate; overly generic or AI-generated wording may negatively affect how the application is received.
