Unmasking Domestic Violence Among Chinese Americans: How to Better Support Marginalized Population
On January 16th, 2024, Google software engineer Liren Chen was arrested under domestic abuse and first-degree murder in his house in Santa Clara, CA. He was accused of beating his wife to death in their home in Santa Clara, California. Chen had admitted to punching Yu on her head until her last breath and ultimately causing her fatal death during the instigation.
Chen and Yu had everything any immigrant to the U.S. could ever wish for – a master’s degree from an internationally renowned institution, a top-tier job with a decent salary at Google, and a long-term relationship that dated back to their undergraduate days.
For many, it is hard to believe domestic violence could have happened in today’s society, let alone in a family like this. The truth is that there are even many more undereducated, non-English speaking, disabled, and/or elderly Chinese women struggling under the double oppression of intimate relationship violence and economic, racial and gender discrimination.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, AWDPI has invited Associate Professor Gina at the University of Chicago, Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice. We will use the Google engineer murder case as a starting point to explore the definitions of domestic violence and gender-based violence. We aim to understand the impact of violence on physical and psychological health, discuss how discrimination based on race and immigration status can have significant impacts on individuals' willingness and ability to seek help, and explore how such discrimination affects the community in the long run. Finally, we will discuss how to better support survivors of gender-based violence.
