Unmasking Domestic Violence Among Chinese Americans: From the Chinese Google Software Engineer’s Murder Case to Structural and Survivor Empowerment In Broader Chicago Area

Unmasking Domestic Violence Among Chinese Americans: From the Chinese Google Software Engineer’s Murder Case to Structural and Survivor Empowerment In Broader Chicago Area

On January 16th, 2024, Google software engineer Liren Chen was arrested under domestic abuse and first-degree murder in his house in Santa Clara, CA. He was accused of beating his wife to death in their home in Santa Clara, California. Chen had admitted to punching Yu on her head until her last breath and ultimately causing her fatal death during the instigation.

Chen and Yu had everything any immigrant to the U.S. could ever wish for – a master’s degree from an internationally renowned institution, a top-tier job with a decent salary at Google, and a long-term relationship that dated back to their undergraduate days.

For many, it is hard to believe domestic violence could have happened in today’s society, let alone in a family like this. The truth is that there are even many more undereducated, non-English speaking, disabled, and/or elderly Chinese women struggling under the double oppression of intimate relationship violence and economic, racial and gender discrimination.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we seek to unveil through this workshop the systemic structural problems that Chinese Americans face as a vulnerable population that significantly obstructs advocacy of Chinese women’s rights. From Liren Chen’s murder case, we will delve into the demographics of these domestic violence cases and seek possible solutions to advocate for domestic violence survivors’ rights and support systems.
